On September 1, 2005, the United States Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe, visited the Mayors of Gdynia and Sopot as well as the Municipal NGO Support Center in Gdynia and the office of NEWW-Poland, the Network of East West Women, in Gdansk.

Ambassador Ashe met with the Mayor of Gdynia, Wojciech Szczurek. Ambassador Ashe then visited the Municipal NGO Support Center in Gdynia with Michal Guc, the Deputy Mayor of Gdynia. The Ambassador praised Gdynia for their active support of NGOs by providing a meeting center as well as by their small NGO grants program.

Ambassador Ashe called on the Mayor of Sopot, Jacek Karnowski, a former participant of the Embassy’s International Visitor Program. In Gdansk, the Ambassador met with members of NEWW-Poland and the director, Malgorzata Tarasiewicz. Ambassador Ashe commended NEWW for establishing several domestic violence safe houses in Poland and encouraged the organization to continue to lobby for womens’ rights issues.

During two different local press interviews, Ambassador Ashe stressed the importance of NGOs in civic development and encouraged Polish women to become more active in the political process by running for office.
