The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is awarding two grants to help Poland’s economic development - the first is a $352,600 grant to Metalko Sp.z.o.o. to partially fund a feasibility study on a proposed waste recycling and waste-to-energy project in Bydgoszcz. The grant was conferred on June 30 at the U.S. Commercial Service in Warsaw.
On July 1, USTDA is awarding a $429,098 grant to Miejskie Przedsiebiorstwo Energetyki Cielplnej Wroclaw SA (MPEC Wroclaw), to partially fund a feasibility study on the proposed expansion of a telecommunications network in Wroclaw.
Since 1991, USTDA has provided more than $25 million in grant funding to support early project planning activities to assist Poland's development.
Metalko Sp.z.o.o., a subsidiary of Polish chemical producer ZACHEM, and its partners are planning to construct a waste recycling and waste-to-energy facility at ZACHEM's plant site in Bydgoszcz. If implemented, the project would benefit ZACHEM both in terms of the heat and electricity produced by the plant, and the syngas created as a feedstock for its chemical production. In addition, the project could significantly reduce municipal landfill waste in Bydgoszcz.
Regarding the Wroclaw project, Although MPEC Wroclaw currently serves 4,200 households with a wide range of telecommunications services through its fiber-optic network. The proposed project would extend this network to the entire metropolitan area of Wroclaw and would introduce selected broadband services. By encouraging competition with the dominant fixed-line operator, the project will assist Poland in needed telecommunications market liberalization.
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency advances economic development and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries. The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment.
