On March 21, 2006, U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe and Ambassador David Peleg, the Israeli Ambassador to Poland, visited the Treblinka Holocaust Memorial, to highlight the importance of preserving former Nazi death camp sites. Ambassadors Ashe and Peleg also met with memorial officials, local government representatives, and a group of Israeli students visiting the memorial as part of their Holocaust remembrance trip to Poland. The United States Embassy in Warsaw and the Polish Ministry of Culture are collaborating on a “Voluntary Visitors” program which will send a group of Polish representatives working on the Treblinka memorial to the U.S. to meet with representatives of institutions which deal with commemoration, education, maintenance, raising civil conscience, and strengthening the younger generation’s knowledge of history. Ambassador Ashe is personally interested in this project because he feels the Treblinka memorial has “special emotional value for visitors.”
