Tourist visas

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. The "visitor" visa is a nonimmigrant visa for persons desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2). As examples, if the purpose for your planned travel is to consult with business associates, travel for a scientific, educational, professional or business convention, or conference on specific dates, settle an estate, or negotiate a contract, then you would apply for a visitors visa. As additional examples, if the purpose of your planned travel is recreational in nature, including tourism, amusement, visits with friends or relatives, rest, medical treatment, and activities of a fraternal, social, or service nature, then you would apply for a visitors visa. The visa allows a foreign citizen, to travel to the United States port-of entry and request permission of the U.S. immigration inspector to enter the U.S.

Persons traveling to the United States for tourism (such as visiting relatives, sightseeing, etc.) must make an appointment for an interview. Appointments for tourist applicants are scheduled Monday through Friday beginning 7:30a.m., except Polish and American holidays and the last working Friday of the month.

Tourist applicants must submit the electronic application form DS-156 with a bar-code. Visas for tourists are returned by the DHL courier service. Visas can be issued on the same or next day only in emergency situations.

Please come to your scheduled appointment with the documents described in Basic documents and photos. In most cases, the consular officer will make a decision on your eligibility for a nonimmigrant visa at the time of the interview. In a few cases, you may be requested to return with additional documents before a decision can be made. In these rare cases, no appointment will be necessary for you to return to the consular section and present the additional documents.

Additional documents are not required, but may be helpful if they can further establish the situation of the applicant in Poland and their reasons for traveling to the U.S.
