||
On March 14, Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe, and his wife, Joan Ashe, hosted a reception to celebrate the achievements of American and Polish women in transforming culture, history, and politics. The event was also a commemoration of International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th. Attending the event were prominent women politicians, writers, lawyers, economists, educators, and business leaders. After the remarks of Ambassador Ashe, Political Counselor Mary Curtin discussed the role of women in democratic development and Barbara Hillas, wife of Deputy Chief of Mission Kenneth Hillas, spoke about how legal rights at times fail to impact the divide between men and women. Joan Ashe made a presentation on the low levels of women holding public office in the U.S. and the importance of more women running for office in the U.S. as well as in Poland.
