U.S. Embassy Hosts LGBT Activists Judy and Dennis Shepard
30 August 2012
The U.S. Embassy, in partnership with Kampania Przeciw Homofobii (Campaign Against Homophobia, KPH), hosted LGBT activists Judy and Dennis Shepard on September 3 and 4 in Warsaw. Throughout their visit, the Shepards shared their experiences as the parents of Matthew Shepard, a gay student who was murdered in 1998, and subsequently as LGBT activists and co-founders of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
The program aimed to support members of the LGBT community as well as their friends and families and included a meeting with KPH’s Mothers’ Group, a public lecture at the Stefan Batory Foundation, a reception at the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Poland Lee A. Feinstein, as well as a conference in the Sejm entitled “Homophobic Hate Crimes: Polish and International Legal Protection Standards.” Judy and Dennis Shepard were also guests on TVN morning program. Asked how they found strength to establish the foundation named after their son, and to fight in his name, Judy Shepard said: “We wanted to help other parents whose children are homosexual…and we wanted to prevent any similar tragedies from happening in the future.”
