Zofia Korbonska

The Embassy mourns the loss of Zofia Korbonska, a heroine of the Polish Underground resistance, participant in the Warsaw Rising of 1944 and former broadcaster on Voice of America, who died on August 16 at the age of 95 in Washington DC.  During WWII, she broadcast news and information from an underground radio station in Nazi-occupied Poland.  She was the widow of Stefan Korbonski, who co-founded the Polish Underground State and led the Directorate of Civil Resistance throughout the war.  Zofia directed the secret SWIT radio operations.  After their arrest by the NKVD in June 1945, they escaped and fled to Sweden and later to the United States, where they worked for many years for the Polish Service of Voice of America.
